I have such a love for in-home newborn sessions. I think it’s capturing the beauty of a new family unit. The love, the emotion, the sweet details that quickly fade as the newborn phase passes, babies grow and time ticks on. It’s a beautiful time for a family. Here’s a few tips to make for an easy newborn session in your home.
-
Ditch the thought that “My house is not pretty enough” or “I haven’t finished the nursery yet”. Let me put these fears to rest. I’m not there to photograph your gorgeous home. No one cares about that really. I’m there to capture the love and emotion between your sweet family…plus, you won’t care about how Pinterest perfect your house looked 10 years from now- you’ll be just happy to look back on those sweet cheeks and how life was “back then”.
-
Give baby a nice bath before our session. If we haven’t planned on photographing this during our shoot, do this before. This gets baby clean and sometimes a little tired before I show up. I usually like some nursing or feeding shots so we can do that at some point during.
-
Prep bigger siblings before. Tell them what we’ll be doing, and inform them that they need to help our during the session. Helping includes, giving baby kisses, holding the baby, helping feed or taking photos with the baby and family. Talk to them before hand in depth what were doing and why we’re doing it.

Newborn sessions usually run about 2 hours in length. Don’t let this time frame scare you! It takes time to get great shots. Diaper changes, feedings, outfit changes, it all takes time. People will pop in and out of the photos and before you know it, we’re all done! The last thing I want is to rush a newborn session.
